NEW DELHI: At least four people were killed in a stampede that broke out late Wednesday evening in Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati temple.
The stampede broke out near Vaikuntha Dwara Darshan ticketing center as devotees rushed to get tokens. Hundreds of devotees had turned up from across the country for the 10-day Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam commencing from January 10.
“Three women and a man died in the stampede,” the official confirmed to PTI.
Several others who were injured in the stampede were rushed to Sri Venkateswara Ramnarayan Ruia Government General Hospital for treatment.
Husband of one of the deceased named Mallika, said, “While my wife and others were trying to obtain Vaikunta Dwara Darshan tickets, a stampede occurred, resulting in her death. I have informed our relatives and they are on their way.”
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu has expressed his deep shock over the death of the devotees and spoken to officials over the phone about the treatment being provided to the injured in the incident. He also ordered higher officials to go to the scene of the incident and take relief measures to ensure that the injured get better treatment.
The chief minister will visit Tirupati tomorrow morning to meet the injured.
